The viability of an alternative method for estimating the size at sexual maturity of females of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Perciformes, Sciaenidae) was analyzed. This methodology was used to evaluate the size at sexual maturity in crabs, but has not yet been used for this purpose in fishes. Separation of young and adult fishes by this method is accomplished by iterative adjustment of straight-line segments to the data for length of the otolith and length of the fish. The agreement with the estimate previously obtained by another technique and the possibility of calculating the variance indicates that in some cases, the method analyzed can be used successfully to estimate size at sexual maturity in fish. However, additional studies are necessary to detect... |

One thousand two hundred and ninety six Arbor Acres females and 144 males were used to study the influence of feeding time on sexual maturity and carcass composition. Treatments were: T1 = feeding at 6:30 am, T2 = 50% feeding at 6:30 am and 50% at 3:30 pm (dual), T3 = feeding at 11:00 am, T4 = feeding at 3:30 pm. Nutrition and management were as recommended to the commercial line. Variables studied were: sexual maturity at 5% production (SM), mean egg production percentage (PEP) body weight (BW), carcass composition, tibia weight (TIBW) and tibia calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) contents. Analysis of variance was used, and the means were compared using Student's t test. T2 females reached SM at 25.92 weeks, which was earlier (p<0.01) than the other... |

ABSTRACT A weight-length relationship was established for Corydoras paleatus (Jenyns, 1842) (Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) (n=596) from samples taken in November-December 2009 and March-April 2010, in Pinguela Lagoon (29°46'57"S; 50°11'16"W), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The species showed a polyphasic allometric growth pattern, each stanza described by an independent power equation controlled by a switch function: W = a1Lb1 ∙ (1 + eRsc ∙ (L-SCP))-1 + a2Lb2 ∙ [1 - (1 + eRsc ∙ (L-SCP))-1] ; where W is the expected weight for a specific length L, a1 and a2 are the proportionality coefficients for stanzas 1 and 2, b1 and b2 are the allometric coefficients for stanzas 1 and 2, Rsc is the stanza changing rate for the switch function and SCP is the stanza changing... |

Two different biomasses (100 g multiplied by m super(-2) and 1 kg multiplied by m super(-2)) of oysters were put in identical sea-water ponds, thus leading to different trophic conditions, corresponding to rearing techniques. Changes in growth, biochemical composition and sexual maturation were recorded for two age groups. The first one included 9 month-old oysters and the second one 21 month-old oysters, at the beginning of the experiment. For both age groups, significant differences were observed in growth and biochemical composition. Lipids were accumulated faster for the lower biomass. However, the only difference concerning glycogen was observed on the older oysters. They showed a peak at the lowest biomass and a decrease at the larger biomass. Sexual... |

An experimental group (N=7) of three females and four males of mutton snapper Lutjanus analis captured in the wild, whose gonadal development entered in a state of latency because of its confinement in the lab, was maintained under an artificial photothermal cycle of 10 months between October 2001 and July 2002 in order to unblock and estimulate again their sexual maturation. Another group of equal number of fish was used as a control, being maintained during the same time without manipulation of temperature and photoperiod parameters. After eight months the three females of the experimental group showed positive gonadal development signs, their oocyte mean diameters (Ø) reaching 122 ± 76; 86 ± 40; and 122 ± 87 µm respectively. During the tenth month one... |

An overview of the available information on the commercially important squid species distributed in the Argentine Sea and adjacent zones is given. It includes the most representative characteristics to identify the species and general information on their biology, distribution and fisheries. A biological sampling designis presented, with particular emphasis on the identification of sexual maturity stages. The world market of the squid resources has considerably risen in the last decades and one of the most important fishery zones is placed in the Southwest Atlantic region (Area 41, FAO), where squid represent 25. of the total landings. Illex argentinus, sustains the second fishery in volume, with landings reaching 612.000 tonnes in 1999. Other species,... |

The effects of increasing levels of dietary phospholipids (PL) on the reproductive performance, egg and larval quality, and lipid composition of females of the freshwater prawn <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> were investigated. Three isolipidic diets containing similar amounts of highly unsaturated fatty acids but varying levels of PL (0.8, 2.4 and 4.6%) were fed during 180 days to three groups of eight females originating from Thai ponds. No significant differences were observed for fecundity, egg size and hatchability, starved larvae size, and size, survival and tolerance to stress of 8 day-old larvae. Similarly, no major differences in the lipid composition of the midgut gland, ovaries and muscle tissue of females could be detected. Results... |

This study describes the variations in total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids in the midgut gland (MG), ovary, and muscle tissue of wild-caught <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> to elucidate the importance of these components during sexual maturation. Mature females were captured in the Mae Klong River, Thailand, from July to September 1998, and divided into five groups according to their ovarian development. Total lipid levels in the ovary increased with maturation, but no concomitant decrease in MG lipids was observed. Thus, the lipid requirements of the developing ovary are thought to be more dependent on the immediate ingestion of dietary lipid than on MG reserves. Higher proportions of neutral lipids (NL), mainly triacylglycerols (TG),... |

A total of 807 Dipturus chilensis specimens (448 males and 359 females) caught in research cruises performed by the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) during 2011 and 2012 were analyzed. The cruises were carried out between (34°S-48°S) and 50-313 m depth. Mean size at first maturity (TL50) was estimated at 780 mm and 908 mm TL for males and females, respectively, values that represented about 80% of the respective maximum total length observed. Besides, latitudinal differences in sexual maturity estimates were detected. The total number of 4-7 reproductive seasons and 42-52 follicles or individuals of maximum annual potential fecundity estimated in this paper allow to suggest that each female would produce less than 300 eggs... |
